Ways Station, GA, 1925 - For 60 years, this small town about 20 miles South of Savannah struggled to survive after Union General William T. Sherman ended his devastating March to the Sea with a victory at Ft McAllister during the Civil War in 1864. Formerly a thriving agricultural capital with vast rice plantations coloring the landscape, Ways Station simply had trouble recovering until a successful businessman by the name of Henry Ford arrived...
Ford instantly saw potential in the semi-tropical climate of the coast, and originally planned to team with Harvey Firestone to farm rubber trees in the area. Unfortunately, the soil proved inadequate for rubber trees, but it was too late. Ford had fallen in love with Ways Station and decided to purchase the old Richmond rice plantation along the banks of the Great Ogeechee River. Here, Ford and his wife Clara built their winter home, and over the next few years, even in the midst of the Great Depression, transformed the town into a wonderful place to live by providing schools, churches, and health care to its few residents. Then in 1941, the town's name was changed to Richmond Hill in honor of the Fords and their vacation home.
Today, Richmond Hill, GA is known as the premier suburb of Savannah. Just a short drive south, it provides a convenient escape from the congestion, high taxes, and struggling school system in Savannah. With great schools, coastal waters, and a small-town feel with both new and established neighborhoods, Richmond Hill, Georgia is the perfect fit for just about anybody interested in purchasing Real Estate.
